　　Dickens is not a writer disdaining women. Instead，he loves， respects and takes care of them. However, in his novels, he unconsciously degrades women and puts them inferior to men. Great Expectations is evidence to my thesis.

　　There are three aspects in this novel that I believe this kind of thought of Dickens is revealed.

　　The first one is that women are fragile. That is not because those women are in lack of will, but that they need surviving abilities and that of self-survival and struggle against destiny. They always turn to men. That can be called hero saving the beauty。 This notion originated in the Greek tales but is still adopted successively. The only difference between them lies in the plot and structure. Estella is adopted and trained to break men’s hearts by Miss Havisham. Havisham revenges men and marries Estella to an unworthy guy though Pip deeply loves Estella. Nothing can be bitterer than see his lover married to another guy for a man. Pip really fell into the despair of losing Estella. However, Estella suffers a lot and begins to regret for her initial choice for her spouse and begins to treasure

　　Then comes my second point. Facing destiny, women are physically and intellectually inferior to men. Actually it does not mean they have an inferior intelligence, but that it seems so. Or we can say that both men and women have the same potential of intelligence, but women never show a lot. God creates everyone equally, but not everyone is granted the same approaches to success or achievements. Women are restricted to families, which restricts them from showing a lot. They can cook food well, which is one standard for their excellence but not the one for male. The novel goes this way since it implies the male consciousness. Havisham is abandoned on her wedding day, but she keeps the room like the day she got married, while on the other hand she tries every means to revenge men. A feminist De Bufuwa says: One is called woman because she is ‘made’ not ‘born’。 Culturally woman is the product of society and the result of its strict restrictions. Those women who do not obey the disciplines are not regarded as gracious or good women by social criteria, which emphasizes on families, the responsibilities for their husbands and their dependence on men. In Great Expectations, Estella and Havisham’s misfortunes are closely attached to love and marriage. They try to revenge men and but they cannot leave men. Estella leaves Pip, but at last she comes back to him. And Havisham keeps thinking about her marriage day and her husband. So in Dickens’s novel, women are decent on surface, but failed in heart.

　　Every period has an outstanding feature, which make descendants linger in mind. To learn this novel can help us in understanding better women’s efforts to stand up. Society presses public to believe that male plays a dominant role. Havisham can symbolize a feminist but what then? She needs a male accompany. 　　With so many famous masterpieces on the booklist， it is really a pretty hard job to chooseone to read first. After much hesitation and deeply thought， I finally decided to borrowGreat Expectations from the small library.

　　Great Expectations is about love， family， and rejection as Pip and Miss Havisham have bothbeen rejected in certain ways. Pip is a boy around 13 years old， easy to fright， and goesthrough his life suffering lots of sadness. He is in love with a girl named Estella and wantsher to find his love， but for him being shy and not showing himself to her， it makes it veryhard for him.

　　Great Expectations was the penultimate novel pleted by the most popular novelist ofVictorian England， Charles Dickens. Born in Kent， England， in 1812 to a family of modestmeans but great pretensions， Dickens’s early life was marked by both humiliation andambition. Dickens never forgot the period of financial crisis during his childhood， whenfollowing his father’s bankruptcy， he was taken out of school and forced to work in ashoepolish warehouse.

　　I set up my mind to select it for the reason that I have read a brief introduction of thismasterpiece in my high school English textbook before. In addition， a Tale of Two Citieswhich is also written by Charles Dickens， the outstanding and special English writer， left mea wonderful and deep impression， when I finished reading the marvelous story.

　　Of course， Great Expectations didn’t let me down， either. What’s more， the whole structureof the novel is well and elaborately designed. 　　I believe that everyone who reads the book is to like Joe. When he talked about his heavydrinking father who hit him a lot， he said he had a lot of love. Faced with his rude wife， hewould rather seem a bit weak or foolish than stand up to her and fight for himself. Knowingpeacockish Pip was ashamed of his uneducated manners， he left sadly and quietly. The worldrushes on over the strings of the lingering heart making the music of sadness. But when hewas informed of Pip’s illness， he immediately came to take good care of Pip.

　　However， why do I appreciate Magwitch， the bad guy? You may wonder. Indeed， Magwitch did alot of evil things when he was young. But how can you be unmoved when you get to know thatthe old man kept himself going just by thinking of the boy who once did him a small favor?

　　He lost his only daughter and Pip had no parents， so he considered himself as the boy’ssecond father， making up his mind to help his dear boy became a gentleman. He did every kindof job and led a hard life in Australia. At last he made a big fortune and promised himselfthat all the money would go to Pip.

　　He could have led a better life in Australia ，but Ihechose to go back to London .with the simple intention of seeing Pip， he went back at the riskof being hanged! “whatever the fault he had from the start， remember， reader， he had a goodheart.” Joe used these words to describe his father. But I think these words can betterdescribe Magwitch. He lived with the fear of death all his life. Who shuts love out， in turnshall be shut outfrom love. However，thankfully，because Pip finally realized his goodheart， his ending was peaceful.

　　Dickens has Pip as the writer and first person narrator of this account of his lifesexperiences， and the entire story is understood to have been written as a retrospective，rather than as a present tense narrative or a diary or journal. Still， though Pip "knows" howall the events in the story will turn out，he uses only very subtle foreshadowing so that welearn of events only when the Pip in the story does. Pip does， however，use the perspectiveof the bitter lessons hes learned to ment acidly on various actions and attitudes in hisearlier life.

　　I know how to fully understand this novel，twice is far from enough. Pip，Estella， MissHavisham，Biddy even Mr Wemmick， every single character has a story that is well worth myattention. I love this novel so much that I am determined to read the original edition oneday. Believe me. But before that day es，I will see the movie Great Expectations first.

If all the people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too. we will not ashamed because of our folly. This is a social problem.

　　If we never possess anything, we will not mind we lost some thing. Since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor.

　　The protagonist of this novel is Pip （Handel）。 His parents died when he was a baby. His sister had brought him up ‘by hand’。 His sister married to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith. They didn’t have much money, and Pip never went to school to study. But he was often very happy .Because all of his friends are like him. It isn’t very unfortunate to them, this is their lives. 　　Thoughts on Great Expectations

　　During the last month, I have been reading the novel named Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I set up my mind to finish reading it for the simple reason that I have read the Chinese version of this great novel and I was deeply attracted by the story.

　　The main character in this novel is Pip and the whole story goes like this: Pip was a orphan and was brought up by his sister “by hand”. His sister Mrs. Joe was very strict with him while his brother-in-law treat him kindly. As a result, the two developed a intimate relationship. Since Pip was asked to visit Miss Havishams’s house, his mind and his fate began to change. In Miss Havishams’s home, Pip saw her adopted daughter Estella and fell in love with her at the first sight. Then he was determined to be well-educated and become a gentleman in order to deserve the beautiful girl Estella. And much to his delight, he was given a large sum of money and an opportunity to study abroad by an anonymous person. After a period of time, his great expectations came true and he became a gentleman at last. However, he found out that the money was offered by the criminal he had saved when he was young. He felt ashamed and didn’t want to use the money any more. What’s worse, the criminal Magwitch escaped from prison to visit Pip and was noticed by the police. At last, Magwitch was sentenced to death and Pip led a normal life. The beautiful lady became a widow as her husband died. But Pip still loved her and promised to be friends with her all the same. This ending is a bit reaasuring.

　　Among those several characters in the novel, my favourite is Magwitch. He was homeless and poor when he was young and he used to be put into prison several times. No one cared about him, so when little Pip saved him by giving him some food, he felt moved. And he bore Pip’s help in his mind. When he was exiled overseas, he was determined to make a lot of money and help Pip become a gentleman. He worked hard and saved every coin he could, and then sent it to Pip. He did all of these secretly in order to prevent little Pip from being embarrassed. After Pip became a real gentleman, Magwitch returned to England in secret only to see whether Pip had led a good life. What we can find from him is deep love for Pip. Although the society has deserted him, he is not deserted by himself. Different from Miss Havishams who is black-hearted, Magwitch is like a father. He showed his love to Pip without any hesitation. He was just like Pip’s father. This is why I admire him very much.

　　Then when I look back into our society, I find that some parents are not as good as the criminal Magwitch. Cases are that parents push their children to work hard in order to be admitted into the college where they were eager to go when they were young. This usually leads to two consequences. One is that the children are exerted too much pressure and they go to extremes. The other is that their children do as they are told to and don’t have their independent thinking. They lack the comprehensive abilities to cope with fierce competition in today’s society. In other words, they are likely to survive in this competitive world.

　　God is equal to everyone. When Magwitch knew that Estella was his daughter and had been loved by Pip, he felt relieved. I am also relieved because one good turn deserves another.

One day before Christmas, when Pip went to the churchyard where his parents were buried, he met an escaping convict-- Abel Magwitch. Pip brought cakes for the hungry man, which touched Abel deeply, although he was caught by police. After the Christmas, Pip was invited to play with Estella, a beautiful girl adopted by Miss Havisham. Miss Havisham was the richest man in the village. But she was very strange. She was dressed a bridal veil all the whole life after her fiancé left her at the wedding day, taking her a large amount of property. So she lived in the revenge and hated all the men. She treated Estella as a tool to take revenge on all man. When Pip met Estella, he loved her, so did Estella. But Estella knew she was just a tool to carry out the revenge plan of Miss Havisham, so she pretended to be proud, indifferent and look down upon Pip- a relative of a poor blacksmith, which broke Pip’s heart. As a consequence, Pip was determined to become a real gentleman who is in possession of money, good manners, luxurious life and a great expectation for Estella’s sake. Under the help of a stranger who donated a lot of money to him, Pip left Joe and the village, and went to London to live a luxurious life to learn to how to become a real gentleman. Several years later, Pip met Estella again at the old house of Miss Havisham. After knowing her husband has died and the real reason why Estella didn’t choose him before, Pip made a proposal to her. At last, the two lovers were in together and Pip found his real great expectation at the end.

　　When I finished reading the novel, I also take consideration to the question “what a real great expectation is?” In my opinion, great expectation not means money, luxurious life provided by others, even the benefactors are your parents. It is our own dreams that we want to realize by our own efforts. Great expectation may be the further study, a respectable degree, a good job, a warm family or something else. But we must know that our future and great expectation must be mastered by our own. We should working for them, fighting for them, even dying for them, whatever. Only when we got what we want by our own endeavor, can we say we have had a great expectation.

The hero of the book is Pip, who was living in a blacksmith family. Someday, he met Magwitch, who was a convict, and he helped him. To show his gratitude, Magwitch gave Pip a good fortune and Pip led a totally different life after he got the money. However, Pip lost all of his money and fame because of his enemies’ plot at the last and become ordinary people at the last.

　　Dickens is famous for his novel such as Great Expectations, the Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist and so on. He always creates some people in lower class and show their different qualities. In Great Expectations, he tried to show us the conflict between different classes in Victorian

　　Period by telling us the story of Pip. After Pip got the money, he left his friends and family to city, and then he learned to raise his social state. However, he was a child born in a blacksmith family and there’s a wide gap between him and the upper class. Finally, he lost all of his great

　　expectations and went back to his hometown as ordinary people. Fortunately, he met his lover, Estella, in Satis House and they left there together at the end of the story.

　　In the book, my favorite character is Joe, Pip’s brother in law. He was a blacksmith and belonged to the lower social class. However, he possessed some good qualities that made him noble. For example, though Joe didn’t know any word, he thought highly of Pip when Pip tried to write him a letter. What’s more, Pip’s sister always considered Pip as the burden of their family but Joe always believed that his brother can become successful. No matter how unkindly he was treated, Joe was always family to others. Undoubtedly, it’s Joe’s noble quality that prevents Pip from becoming someone snobbish.

　　In my opinion, the story of Pip is really attractive while the writing style is also special. For example, Dickens used simile and metaphor for many times in his book. When Joe visited Pip, Dickens wrote that Joe had taken his hat as a bird’s nest with egg in. I think it’s hard to show the inner world of characters as well as feeling because those things are really abstract. On the other hand, if we write it directly, that may be boring and childish. And by using simile, Dickens transforms the abstract feeling into visual language, with which we can use our imagination to enjoy the story much more easily. I think that we can also make good use of Dickens’s outstanding skills to improve our writing.

　　After reading “Great Expectations”, many people complained that the class difference will always result in tragedy and they think that we should try to destroy those barriers. However, I think the massage that Dickens wants to deliver is that we should always be friendly,

　　After reading the whole book of “Great Expectations” written by Charles Dickens, I can’t find suitable words to express my thoughts completely.

　　First of all, I am attracted by the excellent literary talent of Charles Dickens. The descriptions of the details are just right for the foundation of the background. The design of the story also brings me shock. To me, it is not only a good story, but also a lesson of the life that I am experiencing.

　　But, what I have learnt from the book is not the main idea that Charles Dickens wanted to show. What impresses me deeply is only a supporting role ―Joe. Compared with the life of Pip, what Joe has experienced is so ordinary. He is an ordinary blacksmith, an ordinary husband, an ordinary brother, an ordinary friend, even an ordinary person! However, just such an ordinary person brings me a great special feeling. In his world, life is so simple. He is far away from the complex world which is polluted by the ugly soul of people. May be, “kind-hearted” is the biggest advantage of him, which is also the biggest shortage of him in his daily life.

　　Different from all the other figures in the book, Joe’s life is so simple and his thoughts also stay pure after he experiences whatever sufferings that life gives him. In my opinion, his childhood is miserable. What he has experienced must be unhappy and sorrowful. He grows up in such a family, meets so much violence（May be, in that period, it is common）。To say it exaggeratedly, there must be bad influences on his young heart. 　　Optimism is another spirit in his soul. He never gives in to the difficulties that he meets. Maybe, in his dictionary of life, there is no word with the meaning of shrinking back. But finally, he sets his mind to study and can write letters by himself.

If one does think so, he holds a wrong understanding of the great significance why Dickens creative the work. The hero Pip lived with his sister’s family. 　　This story full of quirkiness from the very beginning to the end, the relations among characters are anfractuous as well which actually attracted me a lot.

　　One of the paragraphs, which I appreciate most implicatively as well as beautifully expresses the feeling between Pip and Estella.

　　“We are friends,” said I, rising and bending over her, as she rose from the bench.

　　‘And will continue friends apart.” Said Estella.

　　I took his hand in mine, and we went out of the ruined place; and, as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first let the forge, so, the evening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her.

The father told one of the boys to go quickly to the spring and fetch christening water; the other six ran along with him, and because each of them wanted to be the first to dip the jug into the well, it fell in and sank.

　　So there they stood and didn‘t know what to do, and none of them dared go home. When they didn‘t come back their father got impatient and said:“ I‘ll wager they‘ve been playing some game again and forgotten all about it, the godless brats.“ He was afraid the little girl would have to die unbaptized, and in his rage he cried out:“ I wish those boys would all turn into ravens.“ He‘d scarcely spoken the words when he heard a whirring of wings in the air overhead, looked up and saw seven coal-black ravens flying away.
